DuPont CSO Scott Collick: carbon fluency means measuring emissions per dollar, not just per kilogram
sustainabilitymag.comDuPont Chief Sustainability Officer Scott Collick says manufacturers should treat carbon metrics like financial metrics. He outlined the company's Carbon Fluency Framework, which evaluates product footprints by mass, revenue, and unit margin instead of looking at emissions as standalone numbers. Collick argues that the same 55kg CO2 footprint means different things for aluminum cans, plastic bottles, paper, or an iPhone, so sustainability teams need to switch denominators to see where efficiency actually improves. Collick also pushed back on green premium talk. He says buyers should focus on the cost per metric ton of avoided emissions, not a vague 5 to 50 percent premium. DuPont currently uses a hybrid Scope 3 approach with 40 percent spend-based, 30 percent activity-based, and 30 percent primary product carbon footprint data. The goal is to move most of that to primary supplier data within two years.
