The City of Duncan in British Columbia voted to continue its carbon neutral status, which it first achieved in 2012, by purchasing carbon offset credits in its annual budget. Council approved the move despite opposition from Coun. Garry Bruce, who argued the money should stay local and that no other municipality in the Cowichan Valley participates in the program. The city bought 217 carbon credits worth about $6,500 in 2025, with the funds going to the Great Bear Rainforest project, the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the world. Staff noted that while the money could be spent on local green projects, those would not offset emissions to the same degree as the verified credits. Council voted to continue the program, with Bruce opposed.
