Dumfries and Galloway Council says it has cut its carbon emissions by more than half since 2017/18, from 48,992 tonnes to 18,340 tonnes. That puts the authority about 63 percent of the way to its revised target of carbon neutrality by 2040. The update came at the audit, risk and scrutiny committee after councillors asked for evidence the region is on track. The council's environment manager described the region as "in the middle of the pack" compared with the other 32 Scottish local authorities. A separate corporate risk is being developed to cover the acute and chronic impacts of climate change on the area. The latest Climate Change Duties Report will be discussed by the climate sub committee today. The article is a useful local example of how net zero pledges translate into actual emissions data, and how councils benchmark progress against each other.
