Dubai Municipality has introduced a fleet of electric bikes for sanitation engineers working in residential areas. The bikes run on lithium-ion batteries, can operate for 8 to 10 hours on a single charge, and carry up to 90 kilograms of waste. They are designed to reduce physical strain on workers during hot summer months while cutting carbon emissions from traditional waste collection vehicles. Agreed. The article says they reduce emissions but no numbers. Also curious if these replace trucks entirely on certain routes or just supplement them. 90kg is not much compared to a truck load so maybe they handle the last mile while trucks do bulk hauling.

The 125 Ah lithium battery is about 1.5 kWh at 12V or 6 kWh at 48V. Either way that is a small pack. Charging infrastructure for a fleet of these is trivial. The real question is whether the bikes hold up in 45C heat and sand. Battery thermal management in that climate is not trivial.

Dubai has been pushing green fleet targets for a while. This is a small but visible step. The policy angle is that it reduces diesel use in municipal operations which helps their carbon accounting. But without a phase out plan for the old trucks the net impact is limited. Still a good pilot.

The bikes weigh 315 kg with battery. That is heavy for a bike. I wonder about tire wear and road damage over time. Also 90 kg waste capacity means multiple trips per route. The efficiency gain might be more about worker comfort than actual tonnage moved. Still a step forward for municipal electrification.
