Direct Rail Services (DRS) and Tesco have marked 20 years of collaboration in UK rail freight, a partnership that has grown from a single service to up to 10 daily trains. The operation has taken hundreds of thousands of lorry journeys off Britain's roads, with each train replacing about 40 trucks. Rail freight produces at least 76% less CO2 than road haulage, supporting the UK's net zero goals. The milestone was celebrated with a new nameplate for locomotive 88010, and comes right after the pair won the Freight & Logistics Achievement of the Year at the National Rail Awards. DRS has also invested in Class 88 bi-mode locomotives that run on electric power with zero exhaust emissions, setting a benchmark for sustainable freight. Looking forward, both companies plan to expand rail freight use, seeking new ways to reduce emissions and improve supply chain efficiency. The partnership shows how collaborative logistics can deliver measurable environmental benefits while keeping shelves stocked reliably.
