The lead author, Ellie Maynard from the University of Exeter, says this is the first study to quantify how seabed carbon disturbance has changed over time using historical archives. The research highlights a gap in understanding the long-term effects of human activities on the seabed. While the exact fate of the disturbed carbon remains uncertain, the findings point to a need for better monitoring and targeted protection of carbon-rich muddy seabeds. Policymakers could use this data to prioritize areas with the highest carbon risk when managing ocean activities.
