The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Kandla has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ICCT India to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. The partnership focuses on developing scalable solutions for cleaner fuels, port logistics, and low-carbon equipment to modernize shipping operations in Gujarat. In addition to the research partnership, DPA Kandla is preparing for the construction of India's first 150 TPD e-Methanol plant in collaboration with Assam Petrochemicals Limited. This project aims to advance the use of clean fuels and support India's broader net-zero goals for the maritime sector.

Kandla Port is teaming up with ICCT India to cut emissions. They are looking at cleaner fuels and port gear. The more interesting part is the 150 TPD e-Methanol plant they are planning with Assam Petrochemicals.

MoUs are a start, but the real test is the incentive structure for ship owners to actually use that e-Methanol. Without a clear carbon price or mandate, the uptake might stay low regardless of availability.

The e-Methanol plant sounds good on paper, but where is the green hydrogen coming from? If the electricity for the electrolysis isn't from new renewables, it is just shifting the emissions elsewhere. Any word on the power source?

Exactly. Also, updating port equipment to low-carbon versions usually hits a wall with maintenance costs and labor training. I want to see the actual CAPEX plan for the equipment upgrades.
