DP World studies small modular nuclear reactors for port electrification at Constanța, Romania

The feasibility study will model port energy demand from 2030 to 2050, covering electrified equipment, shore power, AI data centers, and industrial heating. DP World sees nuclear SMRs as a potential source of stable, low-carbon electricity for port operations. The study builds on a 2024 memorandum of understanding exploring nuclear energy for DP World's UK ports. Romania was chosen for its established nuclear energy sector and focus on energy security. If the study shows promise, further technical assessment, regulatory review, and stakeholder engagement would follow before any deployment. This is an early-stage exploration of nuclear power for industrial port electrification. The results could inform how ports balance rising electricity demand with decarbonization goals, though SMR commercialization timelines remain uncertain.
