DP World has signed an agreement with French research group CEA and the TerraWater Institute to study whether small modular reactors (SMRs) could power the Port of Constanta in Romania. The feasibility study will model energy demand from 2030 to 2050 and assess technical, safety, and economic factors for integrating nuclear power into port operations. Ports are electrifying fast with shore power, electric equipment, and data centers, all of which need reliable low-carbon electricity. Romania already has decades of nuclear experience. If the study shows SMRs are viable, Constanta could become a test case for nuclear-powered industrial ports across Europe. This is early stage. No construction decisions have been made. But the study signals that major logistics operators see nuclear as a serious option for grid-scale decarbonization, not just a talking point.
