DP World has started its first global seagrass restoration initiative on Geoje Island in South Korea. The work is a partnership with Korea Green Foundation and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA), and includes ongoing monitoring and community engagement. Seagrass meadows are considered a blue carbon ecosystem because they absorb and store carbon naturally while supporting marine biodiversity and coastal protection. The project is expected to improve local fish catch potential and coastal resilience. DP World also runs a mangrove restoration program in Indonesia and similar habitat projects in the Philippines and Australia. The initiative was announced on World Ocean Day with an initial transplant of about 6,000 seagrass shoots. The partners plan to use scientific research to guide restoration methods and involve local fishing communities in long-term stewardship of the site.

Interesting that a port and logistics company is doing seagrass restoration. Their core business is shipping, which has a big carbon footprint. This might be part of their offset strategy, but 2.4 hectares is tiny compared to their emissions.
