DP World launches seagrass restoration project in South Korea for blue carbon and marine biodiversity

DP World has started its first global seagrass restoration initiative on Geoje Island in South Korea, in partnership with the Korea Green Foundation and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency. The project aims to restore 2.4 hectares of seagrass meadows over four years, transplanting around 6,000 shoots along the Dadae coastline. Seagrass meadows are recognized as blue carbon ecosystems because they absorb and store carbon naturally, while also supporting marine species and preventing coastal erosion. The initiative includes ongoing monitoring by FIRA and community engagement to ensure long-term stewardship. It builds on DP World's broader regional sustainability efforts, including mangrove restoration in Indonesia and coral reef restoration in Australia. The project highlights how private sector involvement in blue carbon restoration can contribute to climate goals and local livelihoods.
