DP World invests $1M in Hapag-Lloyd biofuel programme for ocean freight carbon insetting
splash247.comDP World committed $1 million to Hapag-Lloyd's Ship Green programme, funding waste-based biofuels to cut emissions from ocean freight in the Americas. The investment over four quarters is expected to avoid 4,762 tonnes of CO2. Unlike carbon offsets, insetting reduces emissions within the transport chain by replacing fossil fuels directly. Hapag-Lloyd says the certified biofuels can cut greenhouse gases by at least 84% on a well-to-wake basis versus conventional marine fuel. DP World's Americas ocean freight division will offer customers verified carbon insets tied to their cargo, letting them allocate specific emission reductions without waiting for new alternative-fuel ships. The deal shows how logistics firms are commercialising lower-carbon shipping through partnerships. It also highlights the growing distinction between offsets and insetting in maritime decarbonisation, a shift that cargo owners and regulators are watching closely.
