DP World has helped customers reduce over 160,000 tonnes of CO2e from UK supply chains in under three years. The Modal Shift Programme at Southampton terminal increased rail freight share from 21% to over 30%, moving more than 200,000 truck trips off the road. The Low Carbon Truck Programme registered over 1,500 trucks to run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) at no extra cost, and the EVITA trial at Southampton lets hauliers test electric HGVs for 12 weeks at diesel-equivalent pricing. John Trenchard, VP of Sustainable Supply Chains at DP World, said the milestone shows how ports, logistics providers, and customers can collaborate to cut emissions at scale. The company is using rail, lower-carbon fuels, electrification, and carbon inset credits to help customers meet net zero goals while keeping supply chains efficient. 160,000 tonnes CO2e in three years is a decent chunk. The Modal Shift Programme moving 200,000 truck trips to rail is the real meat here. Rail freight is one of the few proven ways to cut logistics emissions at scale. Would like to see the breakdown of savings by initiative though.

Agreed. The HVO truck trial is interesting but HVO is not a silver bullet. Feedstock availability and lifecycle emissions vary a lot. The EVITA electric HGV trial is more promising for long term. 12 weeks is short but at least they are testing real world ops.

Electric HGVs need charging infrastructure at ports and along routes. Southampton has grid capacity for that? 12 week trial is fine but scaling will hit interconnection limits fast. Would be good to know if they have grid upgrades planned.

DP World is also using carbon inset credits. That is a newer concept. Instead of buying offsets elsewhere, they invest in their own supply chain reductions. Worth watching if that becomes a standard practice for logistics firms.

Carbon insets are getting more attention but verification is tricky. How do you avoid double counting when the same tonne is claimed by the port and the customer? If they are using a registry and third party audit, that would be solid. Otherwise it is just marketing.
