DP World cuts 160,000 tonnes of carbon emissions through rail and low-carbon trucking in UK supply chains

DP World has helped its customers cut more than 160,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions in UK supply chains over three years. The logistics company achieved this through a Modal Shift Programme that increased rail freight at its Southampton terminal from 21% to over 30%, moving more than 200,000 truck journeys off the road. Additional programs include a Low Carbon Truck Programme that lets hauliers switch from diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil at no extra cost, and a Carbon Inset Programme that now covers over 250,000 TEUs of cargo with emissions reduction certificates. The company also launched an Electric Vehicle Introduction and Transition Accelerator trial in Southampton, allowing hauliers to test electric HGVs at diesel-equivalent costs for 12 weeks. DP World's Container Terminal Inset Certificates let customers count emissions reductions from electrification, renewable electricity, and lower-carbon fuels toward their own decarbonization targets. The company operates in over 75 countries and handles more than nine percent of global containerized trade.

160,000 tonnes of CO2e savings in three years is a decent number. The Modal Shift Programme moving 200,000 truck journeys to rail is the real meat here. Rail freight is one of the few proven ways to cut transport emissions at scale.

The rail shift from 21% to 30% is solid but I wonder what the ceiling is for that terminal. Also the HVO switch is a bridge fuel, not a long term fix. The EVITA trial with electric HGVs at diesel equivalent cost is more interesting if it scales.

The Carbon Inset Programme with Container Terminal Inset Certificates is the part that matters for carbon accounting. If those certificates are verified and not double counted, they give customers a real tool for Scope 3 reporting. The 250kg per container cap is still small though.

Rail shift is the biggest single lever here. Moving 200,000 truck journeys off road is a concrete action. The HVO switch is a stopgap but the EVITA trial with electric HGVs at diesel equivalent cost is the one to watch for real long term impact.

The Carbon Inset Programme with 250,000 TEUs registered shows demand for verified emission reductions in supply chains. If these certificates are credible, they could become a template for other ports. The 250kg per container cap seems low but it is a start.
