DP World has helped UK supply chain customers cut over 160,000 tonnes of CO2e in under three years. The Modal Shift Programme boosted rail freight at Southampton from 21% to over 30%, removing 200,000 truck trips from roads. The Low Carbon Truck Programme registered 1,500 trucks to run on HVO fuel at no extra cost, and a new EVITA trial lets hauliers test electric HGVs for 12 weeks at diesel-equivalent cost. The Carbon Inset Programme now covers over 250,000 TEUs, offering 250 kg of CO2e credits per container. DP World also launched Container Terminal Inset Certificates based on real emissions cuts from electrification, renewable electricity, and HVO use at Southampton. These let customers count supply chain reductions toward their own Scope 3 targets. This shows how ports and logistics operators can cut emissions at scale without breaking supply chain efficiency. The focus on rail modal shift, drop-in fuels, and verified insets gives other operators a concrete template to follow.

160k tonnes in 3 years is decent. The rail shift from 21 to 30% is the biggest chunk. HVO is a stopgap but works now. Would like to see the breakdown of savings per initiative.

Agree. The Modal Shift Programme seems like the real workhorse. 200k truck trips off road is tangible. The inset certificates are interesting but need third party verification to be credible.

The EVITA trial with electric HGVs is the part I want to see numbers on. 12 weeks is short. Range, charging infrastructure, and grid capacity at depots will decide if it scales.

Carbon insets are better than offsets in theory because they reduce actual supply chain emissions. But the 250 kg per container figure needs methodology disclosure. How is it calculated and who audits it?

Good point. Without a standard for inset certificates, it's hard to compare across operators. The Container Terminal Inset Certificates are new. Hope they publish the carbon accounting rules.

Overall this is a solid case study for logistics decarbonization. Rail modal shift, HVO as a transition fuel, and electrification trials. More ports should publish this level of detail.
