Dorset oil-heated homes urged to press new government for renewable liquid fuel response
dorsetecho.co.ukThousands of oil-heated households in Dorset are being asked to write to the new Burnham government and demand an answer on the Alternative Clean Heating consultation. The previous administration collected feedback on low-carbon heating options, and around 16,000 households and technicians backed renewable liquid fuels like hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). The push comes from OFTEC and UKIFDA, who say rural households cannot realistically switch to heat pumps. Even with the £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, the average cost to install a heat pump is around £16,900. HVO can be blended into existing oil boilers and tanks with no upfront cost, which is why the industry sees it as a practical stopgap for off-grid homes. The Future Ready Fuel campaign wants the government to respond to the consultation and launch a technical consultation on introducing the fuel. It is also a test of whether UK heating policy can accommodate alternatives to heat pumps in rural decarbonization without leaving households stuck with unaffordable upfront costs.
