DongSung Finetec, an energy solutions arm of DongSung Chemical, has developed low-carbon insulation for LNG carriers. The product received carbon footprint verification from DNV, showing a 33% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the full lifecycle from extraction to disposal. Applied to a large 174,000 cubic meter LNG carrier, the insulation can cut about 54,500 tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 25,000 passenger cars off the road for a year. The company also improved thermal conductivity by up to 6% in cryogenic conditions, which reduces boil-off gas and cargo loss during transport. DongSung Finetec plans to target the growing eco-friendly ship market as the International Maritime Organization tightens environmental regulations. The product is part of their Ecoteco brand focused on climate-response technology for marine insulation.
