At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Dongfeng Motor presented its new T1 platform for commercial vehicles and three hydrogen-powered models covering long-haul logistics, resource transport, and urban cold chain. The platform integrates fuel cells, hydrogen storage, batteries, and thermal management, with claims of under 7 kg hydrogen consumption per 100 km and a range of up to 1,700 km. The company also revealed a 400 kW fuel cell product and said it will take its hydrogen commercialization experience, built on over 10,000 vehicles in 40 Chinese cities, to global markets. The showcase signals growing momentum for hydrogen in heavy-duty transport, but the zero-carbon label depends on hydrogen production methods. Dongfeng did not specify whether the hydrogen is green or from fossil sources. Infrastructure remains a key challenge, as refueling networks for heavy trucks are sparse outside China. The T1 platform's integrated design could set a benchmark, but fleet operators will want real data on total cost of ownership, durability, and maintenance before switching from diesel.
