Classification society DNV has published a new recommended practice (DNV-RP-0698) that standardizes how onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) systems are measured and verified. The framework applies to both newbuild and retrofit projects and covers capture rate, captured CO2 quantity, emissions to atmosphere, and gross capture efficiency. It is technology-neutral and works with pre-combustion, post-combustion, and oxy-fuel systems. With about 90% of the global fleet still using fossil fuels, onboard carbon capture is seen as a key option for reducing emissions from existing vessels that cannot easily switch to low-carbon fuels. DNV notes that developing CO2 offloading infrastructure at just 20 major ports could cut total global fleet emissions by 9%. The framework aims to give shipowners, yards, and technology developers a shared technical language to support investment and deployment decisions.

I wonder how the energy penalty of running these systems plays into the gross capture efficiency metric. If the ship burns more fuel to run the capture, the net CO2 reduction might be smaller than the capture rate suggests.

The IMO is still working on its own guidelines for onboard carbon capture, expected by 2028. DNV's framework could influence that process or at least give early movers a way to report consistently before the IMO rules are final.

Retrofitting existing ships with carbon capture is a different challenge from newbuilds. Space, weight, and power constraints are real. The framework being technology-neutral helps, but the retrofit economics will decide adoption.
