Classification society DNV has verified that Carbon Ridge's centrifugal onboard carbon capture system achieved a peak CO2 capture rate of 98% during a pilot on a Scorpio Tankers vessel. The five month trial on the STI Spiga, a 109,999 dwt product tanker, showed that 55% of observations fell between 86% and 98% capture. This is the first maritime deployment of a centrifugal OCCS system, and DNV used its new Recommended Practice for performance verification to confirm the results. The pilot, which started in July 2025, captured and treated part of the emissions stream while the ship was in regular commercial service. The real test is cost per tonne of CO2 captured onboard and what happens to the captured carbon. Storage or utilization at port adds logistics cost. If the system is cheap enough to install and operate, it could be a bridge solution for existing ships that can't retrofit to alternative fuels.
