DNV has granted Approval in Principle for a floating blue ammonia production concept developed by BW Offshore and McDermott. The FPSO design is meant to process up to 3 million cubic meters of natural gas per day and produce more than 1 million tonnes of ammonia per year, with carbon capture designed to remove up to 99% of CO2 from production. The estimated carbon intensity is around 0.5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of ammonia. The concept targets offshore gas fields that lack pipeline or port infrastructure. Ammonia would be stored in refrigerated tanks on the FPSO and offloaded directly to gas carriers, avoiding the need for large onshore facilities. BW Offshore says it will use the DNV approval to work with oil and gas developers on moving the concept toward project execution. For carbon markets and low-carbon fuel buyers, the main open question is how the captured CO2 is stored and verified. The design assumes geological sequestration or other approved uses, so the final emissions profile will depend on the full chain.
