DNGV, a South Korean company specializing in gas engine control and automotive software, has been selected to lead a government-backed project to develop hydrogen engine control systems and key components. The project focuses on localizing engine control units (ECUs) and ignition devices, which currently rely heavily on overseas suppliers. The work is supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and other agencies. The technology targets heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment like excavators. Hydrogen engines use existing engine technology and production infrastructure, making them a practical option for cutting carbon in sectors that are hard to electrify. However, hydrogen combustion can produce nitrogen oxides (NOx), so sophisticated exhaust emissions control is essential. DNGV says it will build in-house design and testing capabilities and aims to commercialize the technology in real vehicles and machinery. The project is part of broader efforts to strengthen supply chain self-reliance for eco-friendly commercial mobility and zero-emission equipment.
