Discovery Green and York Timbers sign 10 year renewable energy PPA for South African sawmill
greenbuildingafrica.co.zaDiscovery Green, a business of Discovery Limited, has signed a 10 year power purchase agreement with York Timber Holdings to supply renewable energy to its Jessievale sawmill in South Africa. The deal will cover 90% of the sawmill's electricity demand and is expected to cut carbon emissions by thousands of tonnes of CO2 annually. Discovery Green's wheeling platform now serves over 50 businesses, with more than 740 MW of generation capacity under development. The agreement gives York Timbers long term price certainty on electricity, which is a major production cost for the forestry and wood processing company. The company also cited environmental compliance with Forest Stewardship Council and IFC standards as a factor. This deal shows how industrial energy buyers in South Africa are using PPAs to lock in lower cost renewable power while meeting sustainability targets.
