Researchers at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) have developed a direct hydrogenation process to convert carbon dioxide into gasoline and naphtha. By using a zinc-modified zeolite catalyst, the team bypassed the traditional two-step conversion process, reducing energy needs and simplifying production. The pilot plant currently produces 50 kg of liquid hydrocarbons per day with a 50% synthesis yield. The project aims to scale this technology to commercial plants capable of producing over 100,000 tons annually, potentially serving as a key component for renewable power-to-liquids systems.
