A new World Bank report shows direct carbon pricing now covers just over 29% of global greenhouse gas emissions. There are 87 carbon pricing policies worldwide, up seven from last year. Revenues from carbon pricing have more than tripled over the past decade, reaching over $107 billion in 2025. The average carbon price is nearly $21 per tonne of CO2 equivalent. India and Vietnam saw the biggest developments in the past year. Carbon credit issuances rose 8% from 2024 to 2025, though prices dipped slightly. Projects with high ratings for forest conservation or those used by international airlines still commanded a premium. If planned instruments launch in more major emerging economies, coverage could hit about one third of global emissions.

The World Bank report usually breaks out use of revenues. Last year about half went to green programs. Would like to see that share climb.

True, but prices have doubled over a decade. The trend matters. India and Vietnam entering the space is a bigger deal than a few dollars per tonne.

At $21/tCO2e, the math on building retrofits barely works. You need either higher prices or complementary subsidies to make efficiency projects pencil out.
