Researchers from the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute compared the techno-economic feasibility of direct air capture and direct ocean capture. The study highlights how bipolar membrane electrodialysis can replace high-heat thermal regeneration to lower the carbon footprint of these processes. While direct ocean capture leverages higher carbon concentrations in seawater to reduce energy needs, it requires significantly larger infrastructure. The findings emphasize that the net effectiveness of both technologies depends heavily on the decarbonization of the electricity grid providing the power.
