Direct Air Capture Startup Spiritus Pivots from Carbon Removal to Enhanced Oil Recovery
energyconnects.comSpiritus, a direct air capture startup based in Los Alamos, New Mexico, is shifting its business model from permanent carbon removal to selling captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The company has signed letters of intent with three US oil producers and plans to supply over 3 million tons of CO2 annually to extract more than 70 million additional barrels of oil. CEO Charles Cadieu says the removal market is challenged, citing canceled federal funding and a sharp cut in Microsoft's carbon credit purchases. The pivot reflects broader turbulence in the carbon removal industry, with startups like Noya shutting down and others relocating abroad. While some researchers argue that using DAC for EOR does not achieve carbon neutrality, Spiritus sees commercial traction in oilfield revenue. The company expects its first commercial plant online within two years, though it has yet to deliver any removal credits. This move highlights the tension between climate goals and market realities, as well as the fragility of policy-dependent clean tech ventures.
