Digital soil mapping for soil carbon MRV: a scalable alternative for carbon offset markets

The approach uses physical soil samples from a hypothetical project across seven fields in two U.S. states to calibrate, predict, and validate SOC estimates. The authors report that estimated uncertainty of averaged SOC stocks was less than 1 Mg per hectare, leading to a 12% uncertainty deduction for a 5-year, 430-acre project. For larger projects over 50,000 acres with longer timeframes, simulations suggest deductions below 5%. This DSM method offers a cost-effective and scalable alternative to existing MRV approaches that rely on biogeochemical models and repeated soil sampling. By focusing on outcome-based measurements of actual SOC change rather than model projections, the framework addresses key limitations in current soil carbon crediting methodologies. The study provides a practical pathway for improving the credibility and scalability of soil carbon offset markets, which have struggled with high costs and verification challenges.
