Digital Reef and Oreasoc link 3.3 GW data centre pipeline to Amazon rainforest carbon credits

Digital Reef has signed an offtake agreement with Oreasoc Agriculture to buy environmental assets from over 30 million hectares of Amazon rainforest. The deal is meant to offset emissions from Digital Reef's 3.3 GW data centre pipeline. Xange.com will provide digital MRV to monitor both the data centres and the forest. The agreement responds to rising data centre electricity demand, which the IEA expects to double by 2030. Digital Reef says it will use verified environmental assets from Oreasoc to mitigate emissions that cannot be eliminated through efficiency measures. Xange's tools track energy, water, and emissions at data centres, while Polaris monitors rainforest conditions via satellite and ground data. Questions remain about how these assets are verified and whether they meet standards like Article 6. The companies did not specify which carbon standard applies. The deal is a sign that data centre operators are looking for nature-based offsets to address their growing footprint.
