Dhaka University completed its first tree census, identifying 17,161 trees across 277 species. The survey calculated 4,650 metric tonnes of carbon stored in campus trees, with 9,900 tonnes of above-ground biomass and 2,370 tonnes below ground. Exotic species like Mahogany and Teak make up 78.5% of total biomass, while native species account for the rest. The university plans to use this data to guide future planting and conservation efforts. The census also found that 58% of species are native but exotic trees dominate by biomass. The university's vice chancellor called for more native species planting to support biodiversity and ecological balance. This kind of campus level carbon accounting is a small but concrete step for urban carbon management and could serve as a model for other institutions in Bangladesh and beyond.
