Dhaka University and Stockholm University host policy dialogue on black carbon and short-lived climate pollutants in Bangladesh
dailycountrytodaybd.comA high-level science-policy dialogue on black carbon and other short-lived climate pollutants took place at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, organized by Dhaka University and Stockholm University with support from the Clean Air Fund. Speakers included Bangladesh's State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Swedish Ambassador, and academic representatives. The discussion focused on the health and climate impacts of black carbon, the need for stricter emission policies, cleaner transport, and stronger regional cooperation on cross-border pollution. During the event, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam announced a government target to generate 4,000 megawatts of solar power within three months, with 296 MW coming from Dhaka city alone, and a longer-term goal of 10,000 MW. Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr. Mahdi Amin noted that renewable energy is a priority given the fragile state of the energy sector. The dialogue highlighted how reducing short-lived climate pollutants like black carbon can deliver near-term climate and air quality benefits, while also supporting Bangladesh's energy transition.
