Denmark opens EU's first full-scale CO2 storage site at Project Greensand

Denmark has officially opened the EU's first full-scale CO2 storage site. The Greensand project, led by INEOS Energy with partners Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund, will store up to 400,000 tons of CO2 per year in the first commercial phase. CO2 is captured from Danish biomethane plants, liquefied, transported by truck and ship to the Nini West reservoir, and injected 1,800 meters beneath the seabed. The project has the potential to scale to 4-8 million tons annually. The opening marks a shift from demonstration to commercial operation for offshore CO2 storage in Europe. The site is the first to receive a full-scale storage approval from the Danish Energy Agency, and the EU is treating it as a template for industrial decarbonization. The key question now is how quickly capacity can expand and whether cross-border CO2 transport and storage rules will keep pace.
