Denmark has signed its largest carbon capture contract, awarding EUR 2.2 billion to cement maker Aalborg Portland. The 15 year deal requires the company to capture and store 1.25 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030 at its Rordal facility. The subsidy works out to EUR 117 per tonne of stored carbon dioxide. The project, called ACCSION, will use Air Liquide's Cryocap technology and run entirely on renewable electricity. It will also capture 80 MW of surplus process heat for district heating, serving over 19,000 local homes. The European Union's Innovation Fund contributed EUR 220 million to the project.
