A new perspective in Nature Reviews Materials argues that supply-side fixes like carbon capture, hydrogen, and new production processes cannot decarbonize bulk material production fast enough. The authors show that relying mainly on technological substitution requires implausible growth in public finance, emissions-free electricity, and carbon storage. Instead, they say demand-side innovation changes in how materials are designed, used, valued, and governed must be the central pillar of material climate policy. The study uses a resource-constrained model of the UK's net zero transition to compare pathways. Pathways centered on material efficiency, sufficiency, and societal participation deliver substantial mitigation within realistic resource limits. The authors conclude that credible material decarbonization depends on clear policy direction that accelerates participatory change and reduces demand for primary material production. This challenges the dominant focus on supply-side technology in current climate policy.
