Delta Air Lines installs Vortex Control Technologies finlets on 240 Boeing 737s to cut fuel burn and emissions
economyclassandbeyond.boardingarea.comDelta Air Lines is equipping 240 of its Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER aircraft with finlets from Vortex Control Technologies. These aerodynamic devices reduce drag on the aft fuselage, improving fuel efficiency by roughly 1.4% per aircraft. Since about 90% of Delta's carbon emissions come from jet fuel, the retrofit directly cuts CO2 output across its narrowbody fleet. The finlets have already passed flight testing and computational fluid dynamics analysis. Delta says the modification supports its broader sustainability goals while also lowering operating costs. VCT claims each finlet-equipped aircraft can save around $125,000 per year in fuel. Other carriers like Sun Express and Norwegian Air Shuttle have also adopted the technology after EASA approval. This is a practical, incremental step in aviation decarbonization. Retrofits like finlets offer immediate fuel savings and emissions reductions without waiting for new aircraft or alternative fuels. For airlines operating large 737NG fleets, the per-plane savings add up fast when scaled across hundreds of aircraft.
