A study by researchers from Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Delhi reveals that urban forests in Delhi store significant amounts of carbon, particularly in the soil. Findings suggest that one hectare of urban forest can store approximately 346.9 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, creating a potential revenue stream through carbon credits. The research highlights that soil organic carbon accounts for over 43 percent of the total storage. Native species like neem and babool are identified as high performers in carbon absorption, supporting the Delhi Government's new framework to monetize pollution reduction through scientific measurement and international credit standards.
