Researchers from JNU and Delhi University found that urban forests in Delhi store significant amounts of carbon, particularly in the soil. The study indicates that one hectare of urban forest can sequester nearly 347 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, creating a potential revenue stream through carbon credits. Soil organic carbon accounts for over 43 percent of the total stored carbon, highlighting the importance of underground biomass. Native species like neem and babool were identified as the most effective absorbers, supporting the city's goals to monetize pollution reduction through a new carbon credit framework.
