Researchers from JNU and the University of Delhi found that urban forests in the capital store significant amounts of carbon, particularly in the soil. The study suggests these ecosystems could generate over Rs 4 lakh per hectare in carbon credits. Findings highlight that soil organic carbon accounts for over 43 percent of total storage. Native species like neem and babool are identified as high performers in semi arid urban conditions, supporting Delhi's broader carbon credit monetization framework.
