Degradable polymers: new molecular design for sustainable plastics from Ehime University
asiaresearchnews.comResearchers at Ehime University have developed a molecular design strategy that makes carbon-carbon backbone polymers degradable under basic conditions. By incorporating alkoxycarbonylmethylene (ACM) units into polymer backbones, the team created specific sites that enable backbone cleavage while maintaining or improving material properties like thermal stability. The approach works with common monomers such as fumarates and acrylates, offering a practical path toward plastics that combine performance with end-of-life degradability. The study, published in Macromolecules, shows that ACM units can be introduced into polystyrene and PMMA without sacrificing thermophysical properties. This could help address plastic waste challenges by enabling better end-of-life management for materials that are normally nondegradable. The research was supported by JSPS KAKENHI grants and conducted at Ehime University.
