A new review highlights that over 50% of soil carbon is stored more than 30 centimeters below the surface. This deep carbon is more stable than surface carbon due to mineral bonds, but it remains vulnerable to rising temperatures and specific land use changes. Researchers suggest that improving deep soil carbon storage through deep rooted crops and biochar could significantly enhance long term carbon removal. This shift in focus challenges current carbon accounting standards that typically only measure the top layer of soil.
