Deep Sky has become the first North American company to deliver verified carbon removal credits from direct air capture (DAC) technology. The Canadian firm provided credits to Microsoft and Royal Bank of Canada after injecting 14 tons of carbon dioxide underground in May 2025. The credits were verified by London-based certification firm Isometric. The company's Alberta pilot facility captures about 3,000 metric tons of CO2 per year and allows multiple DAC developers to test their equipment. Deep Sky also has credit purchase agreements with TD Bank, Lufthansa, and Engie. CEO Alex Petre said the company plans to build a larger commercial DAC project in Canada once the test hub is fully established. DAC removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere, unlike traditional carbon capture that filters emissions at industrial sources. The technology is considered critical for climate goals but remains expensive and hard to scale. Tech companies are among the biggest buyers of removal credits as AI data center growth increases their emissions.
