Deep Sky, a Canadian company, has become the first in North America to deliver verified carbon removal credits using direct air capture (DAC) technology. The credits were supplied to Microsoft and Royal Bank of Canada, verified by London-based certification firm Isometric. The company's Alberta pilot facility captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere and injects it underground, with the first injection of 14 tons in May 2026. Regular injections continue, and buyers receive credits quarterly. DAC technology is expensive and difficult to scale, but high-quality removal credits are in high demand, especially from tech companies with climate commitments. Deep Sky's pilot hub allows multiple DAC companies to test their technologies. The company also has credit deals with TD Bank, Lufthansa, and Engie, and plans to build a large-scale commercial DAC project in Canada once the test hub is established.

Good point on energy. Alberta has cheap natural gas but that undercuts the carbon math unless they use renewables. Isometric verification is a plus. Need to see the methodology.

DAC gets a lot of hype but the cost per ton is still high. For the same money you could insulate a lot of buildings. Still, having a verified product is better than nothing.
