Bacterial populations grew 30 times in just two days after the release. The finding changes how scientists think about the ocean's ability to store carbon. If a large fraction of the carbon in sinking particles is released before reaching the seafloor, the deep ocean may hold less carbon long term than current models assume. That has direct implications for climate projections and carbon cycle accounting.
