Decarbonizing Steel: New Electrified and Hydrogen Production Methods

These methods allow for more modular, distributed production that can integrate with renewable energy grids. In Sweden, the HYBRIT and Stegra initiatives are scaling fossil-free steel by using green hydrogen to remove oxygen from iron ore, emitting water vapor instead of carbon dioxide. These industrial shifts, combined with digital fabrication and BIM integration, are reducing material waste and lowering the embodied carbon of building construction.
