Bengaluru-based startup Danta Innovations is developing a 155mm artillery barrel made from carbon fibre reinforced polymer. The composite design aims to reduce the weight of traditional steel barrels by 70 percent, dropping from 1,400 kg to approximately 420 kg. The system uses a hybrid thermoplastic composite structure with a metallic inner liner and a thermal barrier to handle extreme firing temperatures. It also integrates a fibre optic sensor network for real-time structural health monitoring to improve maintenance and reliability in the field.
