Dangote Cement has announced plans to cut net CO2 emissions intensity by 20% and expand production capacity to 80 million tonnes per annum by 2030. The company also aims to transition its Nigerian fleet trucks to compressed natural gas by 2027, with electric trucks coming in 2026. These moves are part of a broader sustainability strategy tied to the Dangote Group Vision 2030. The company reported a 6.5% reduction in CO2 intensity from its 2021 baseline, along with a 1.7% improvement in energy efficiency and an 8% drop in water consumption. It also co-processed over 437,000 tonnes of waste as alternative fuel. On the social side, Dangote Cement created 625 direct green jobs and increased social investment spending by 56% in 2024. The company is expanding into Botswana and Zimbabwe and building port infrastructure to boost cement exports from Nigeria.

20% emissions cut by 2030 is decent for a cement maker. The CNG fleet switch by 2027 and electric trucks in 2026 are the more interesting bits. Curious how they plan to source the gas and whether the grid can handle the EV charging load.

The CNG transition makes sense given Nigeria's gas reserves. But the electric truck pilot in 2026 is ambitious. Nigeria's grid reliability is poor and charging infrastructure is almost nonexistent outside Lagos. Would like to see details on onsite generation or battery storage plans.

The 20% intensity target is voluntary and not tied to any national carbon pricing mechanism. Nigeria has no carbon tax or ETS for cement. Without a price signal, these targets depend entirely on corporate will and investor pressure. The CDP B rating is decent but not top tier.

The 437k tonnes of waste co-processed as alternative fuel is the most concrete number here. That directly displaces coal or petcoke. The 200 hectare tree planting program is nice PR but carbon sequestration from new trees takes decades to matter. The clinker factor reduction is where the real CO2 savings are.
