The two-phase project generates over 20,000 MWh of renewable electricity each year, avoiding roughly 8,500 tons of CO2 emissions. Ferrovial, the majority shareholder, says the panels also provide natural shading that cuts cooling demand during peak summer, improving overall energy efficiency. The installation uses only existing rooftop space, so no land expansion was needed. This eliminates Scope 2 emissions from terminal electricity use and supports the airport's ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 3+ certification. The project shows how airports in warm climates can reduce carbon intensity through tailored engineering and asset optimization without disrupting operations.

Nice to see an airport go fully solar for its terminal electricity. 20 GWh per year is a solid figure. Would be interesting to know the installed capacity and whether they have any battery backup for cloudy days or night operations.

Agreed. The 8,500 tons CO2 avoided is a rough estimate, depends on the grid mix they are displacing. Turkey's grid is still fairly fossil heavy, so the real benefit might be higher. Also curious if this covers all loads or just terminal buildings.

The shading benefit for cooling is a nice bonus. Airports in hot climates spend a lot on AC. Combining PV with passive cooling makes the business case stronger. Wonder if other airports in the region will follow suit.

Scope 2 elimination is a clear win. But the article doesn't mention if they have PPAs or RECs for any residual consumption. Also, Level 3+ accreditation includes scope 3, so curious how they handle supply chain emissions.

Good example of using existing roof space. No land use conflict. Payback period would be key for other airports considering this. If the tariff is high enough, it might pencil out without subsidies.
