DAERA event helps Northern Ireland food SMEs cut carbon and waste with practical tools
daera-ni.gov.ukNorthern Ireland's agri-food sector is getting a nudge to turn sustainability talk into action. A recent DAERA event at CAFRE Loughry brought together 90 delegates from food and drink businesses to cover the basics: measuring energy, water, waste, and carbon, then picking achievable improvements. Speakers from Henderson Group and companies like Simplyfruit and Deli-Lites showed how efficiency measures and renewable energy can cut both emissions and operating costs. The event also handed out a carbon calculator and announced a follow-up workshop on 28 October for food manufacturers. That one will help businesses work through the calculator and build an actual sustainability plan. For SMEs that supply larger retailers, the message is clear: customer requests for sustainability data are only going to increase, so getting a baseline now makes commercial sense.
