Daejeon Urban Corporation uses parks and green spaces for carbon credits under Korea's forestry emissions trading program

Daejeon Metropolitan Corporation has been selected for Korea's 2026 Forestry-Sector Emissions Trading External Project Registration and Certification Support program, run by the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute. The program allows participants to certify greenhouse gas reductions from forests and green spaces and use those reductions as emission credits. Daejeon Corp. will manage carbon absorption from the Doan Gapcheon Waterfront Area development project, which created waterfront and rest spaces that also function as urban carbon sinks. The corporation plans to apply the same approach to future projects, including a damaged-land restoration project and the Southwest Comprehensive Sports Town development. By linking park development with official carbon reduction certification, Daejeon Corp. aims to build a carbon sink management system that contributes to South Korea's carbon neutrality goals. This is a concrete example of how municipal development projects can generate verified emission credits through urban greening.
