Researchers at Technion Israel Institute of Technology have developed CyanoCement, a biocement that uses cyanobacteria to bind minerals and precipitate calcium carbonate without high emissions. Unlike traditional cement, this material actively captures carbon dioxide from the air, making buildings part of the climate solution. It is designed for facades, interior panels, and decorative structures, keeping the application practical while reducing the carbon footprint of construction. The green color of CyanoCement comes from the living cyanobacteria inside, making its environmental benefit visible. The project won the Green Product Award for its research and impact. This approach shows how ancient microbes can help decarbonize a major industry, though scaling and load-bearing applications remain open questions.
